Last semester, I had the opportunity to participate in an exchange program at L'École de Design in Nantes, France. The experience proved to be both personally and professionally enriching, offering exposure to diverse design thinking and problem-solving approaches through collaboration with peers from around the world, including Italy, Mexico, Canada, Ireland, China, Korea etc.

The learning experience at L'École de Design was exceptional, with developed infrastructure and experienced faculty. Beyond the classroom, France itself offered a wealth of learning opportunities, being a country with a rich design history. The vibrant street art and graffiti that adorned the city’s walls were as inspiring as the masterpieces of great artists like Frida Kahlo, Claude Monet, Vincent van Gogh, and Leonardo da Vinci, which could be seen in the museums. This combination of in-school and out-of-school experiences deeply influenced my approach to design.

The experience of living in France, with its rich culture, cuisine, and daily life, further shaped my perspective on design and life. This exchange program has left a lasting impact on their academic and professional journey, broadening my outlook and inspiring future projects.

Bidisha Sahoo - I had the incredible opportunity to participate in an exchange program specializing in graphic design from September 16 to January 31. This semester was truly transformative, as Paris was a haven for creativity, offering a rich artistic heritage, world-renowned museums, and an inspiring network of design studios. Every street, every gallery, and every artistic space felt like a window into the evolution of design, making it an experience unlike any other.

The main subjects I studied during this program were Animation, Visual Identity, and Character Design. Each course challenged me to think beyond conventional design approaches, blending technical skills with conceptual depth. Animation allowed me to explore motion and storytelling, while Visual Identity helped me understand the power of branding and how design shapes perception. Character Design, on the other hand, gave me a deeper appreciation for illustration and the role of personality in visual narratives.

One of the most valuable aspects of this journey was the hands-on approach to learning. The teaching methods were refreshingly different from what I had previously encountered—encouraging independent thinking, conceptual depth, and a more experimental approach to design. It was both challenging and rewarding, pushing me to step outside my comfort zone and rethink my creative process. I strongly believe that every designer should experience such an environment at least once in their career, as it fosters both artistic and intellectual growth.

Beyond academics, the cultural exposure I gained was equally enriching. Paris is not just a city—it is a living, breathing piece of art, filled with history, innovation, and inspiration at every turn. From exploring exhibitions at the Louvre and Centre Pompidou to visiting hidden artist studios, I found myself immersed in a world where design and culture seamlessly intersect. The vibrant atmosphere, the diversity of creative expressions, and even the day-to-day experiences of living in a new country contributed to my growth, not just as a designer but as an individual.

This journey has left a profound impact on me, deepening my appreciation for design and broadening my creative perspective in ways I never imagined. It has strengthened my passion for visual storytelling and given me a newfound appreciation for the intersection of art, culture, and design. I look forward to carrying these insights into my future projects, continuing to explore, create, and push boundaries in my work.
