IICD is unique in approaching craft and design from the stand-point of material and technique rather than product because this provides the student with a foundation that allows him/her to apply skills in a wide range of industries such as craft artifacts, furniture, interior products, garments, textiles and accessories.

Our Under Graduate Program is of 4 years / 8 semesters duration during which the students take courses which help them understand various craft traditions, their strengths and weaknesses and work towards learning to develop design solutions for contemporary markets. They go through 1 year / 2 semesters of Foundation learning the basics of design following which they specialize in either Hard Material Application (HMA) or Soft Material Application (SMA).

Hard Material Application Curriculum
This deals broadly with processes like firing, forming and fabrication. The students work with materials like with Clay, Terracotta, Wood, Metal, Stone and their combinations. They are exposed to techniques like Throwing, Coiling, Slab-work, Carpentry, Joinery, Turning, Carving, Casting, Fabrication, Embellishment, etc.
Soft Material Application Curriculum
This deals with processes like weaving, surface development and garmenting. The students are taught to work with materials like natural fibers, paper, yarns, fabric, leather, etc. They are exposed to techniques like Spinning, Weaving, Printing, Dyeing, Basketry, Embroidery, Appliqué, Garment Construction, Pattern Making, etc.
IICD alumni, with their grasp of the complexities involved become entrepreneurs, designers, technicians and managers. They go on to build bridges between traditional knowledge banks and markets both at home and abroad to make products that satisfy contemporary needs and also reflect an Indian ethos that is in increasing demand all over the world.

Sizable populations in India depend on traditional craft skills as a source of income and with the growing demands in domestic and international markets there is a need to build bridges between craft persons and new markets as well as work towards an ecosystem where the craftsperson is able to harness creative skills and sensitivities to sustain a desired standard of living.

The Post Graduate program at Indian Institute of Craft and Design has the objective of developing knowledge and human-resources to bring a qualitative change in the Craft sector, working towards improving the quality of life of the craftsperson, enhancing the quality of craft products, facilitating better linkages between markets and the craft sector and preparing a new cadre of highly motivated Craft-Designers and Craft Entrepreneurs & Manages who can fill the emerging need of the craft sector to achieve greater market orientation and penetration.
Our Post-Graduation Program is of 2 and a half years / 5 semesters duration with specialization in either Furniture & Interior Products or Home Textiles. Along with inputs in design & development, marketing and documentation, the curriculum encourages lateral thinking and creativity.
Furniture & Interior Products:
This focuses on design and development of furniture, interior products & fittings, illumination devices for personal, social and professional spaces. The program exposes the students to a multitude of materials which include wood, metal, stone, terracotta and ceramics. The design study exposes them to techniques, production processes, traditional know how and focuses on conceptual and design development to evolve a contemporary Indian craft repertoire. The pedagogy at IICD is ‘hands-on’ learning and includes extensive field study, research and learning from traditional and modern design pedagogues.
Home Textiles (Floor Coverings and Furnishings):
This program deals with woven and printed textiles, non-woven techniques and surface ornamentation using traditional and mass production methods. Emphasis is on building a variety of skills, in combination with theoretical knowledge and practical application with understanding of production methods. The program aims to empower the student to become a well integrated professional through research, field study, professional projects and training in rural clusters and industry. The learning is ‘hands-on’ with an emphasis on conceptual and motivated learning.
Home Textiles are continuously affected by social and cultural preferences of users and designer students strive to fine tune their sensibilities to be able to work in varying cultural contexts. |
