Craft Design Center

Craft Design Centre (CDC) was set up as a model of Public Private Partnership (PPP) between Indian Institute of Crafts and Design (IICD) and Federation of Rajasthan Handicraft Exporters (FORHEX) with financial aid from the Government of Rajasthan. It has been established with a vision to build and create design oriented excellence in the handicraft sector of Rajasthan.

CDC

It has completed a number of design projects with consultant designers and students of IICD for leading exporters and government bodies of Rajasthan. It aims to work on the revival of languishing arts and crafts of Rajasthan and help make them commercially viable. It has also undertaken skill training programs for youth through Rural Mission On Livelihood (RMOL).

Some of the recent projects undertaken by CDC are:

‘Inverted Luxury’ 2009
The textile export industry has certain volumes of stock lot fabric and made ups remaining after every shipment is sent out. Recycling, regeneration and sustainability being continuing themes in international markets, 11 collections were developed for 4  FORHEX members. In this time of recession, these collections have shown innovative methods of using minimal inputs yet generating value.

Recycled Khadi Silk, 2008
Khadi retail shops end up with small remnants of expensive handspun – hand woven silk fabrics, which are sold as ‘cut pieces’. Two projects were initiated to demonstrate creative use and value generation through the ranges developed.

Terracotta Ware at Dausa, 2008
Dausa district is home to 500 potter families who traditionally develop utilitarian wares for local markets. This is an ongoing initiative to use the skills and know how of the potters to develop new product lines for increased opportunities. Votive forms of deities and lamps for home and garden have been developed in an interaction between terracotta artist and terracotta artisans.

Skill Training in Stone Craft at Devli, 2008
This was initiated with RMOL, in partnership with  Centre for Development of Stone (CDOS) and CECOE DECON, an NGO working for livelihood generation. A 21 day workshop was held to train and rehabilitate 21 young artisans from Devli-Tonk District.

Repose with Stone, Jaipur 2007
11 collections of stone products for the home and outdoors were undertaken. It was an initiative for FORHEX members wherein new concepts around the theme of ‘wellness’ was developed. Students mentored by a senior designer developed interesting prototypes using sandstone and marble.
